Musk has always been intrigued by the potential of electric vehicles, and in 2004 he joined the ranks of key investors in Tesla Motors, which was subsequently renamed Tesla, an electric vehicle startup started by businessmen Martin Eberhard and Marc . With a single charge, the Roadster—Tesla's first vehicle—could cover 245 miles (394 km) in 2006. Musk believed that most earlier electric cars were boring and stodgy, but this one was a sports car that could reach 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) in less than four seconds. The firm raised around $226 million on its IPO in 2010. After two years, Tesla unveiled the Model S car, whose performance and design won praise from critics of automobiles. The Dissatisfied with the estimated $68 billion cost of a high-speed rail system in California, Musk proposed a faster alternative in 2013. The Hyperloop is a pneumatic tube that would allow a pod carrying 28 passengers to travel 35 minutes at a top speed of 760 miles per hour (1,220 km/h), which is almost the speed of sound. The Hyperloop is 350 miles (560 km) between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Musk asserted that the Hyperloop will only come with a $6 billion price tag and that it could handle the six million passengers who travel that route annually with pods leaving on average every two minutes. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit against Musk the following month, accusing him of securities fraud and stating that the tweets were "false and misleading." Soon after, the SEC's proposed settlement was turned down by Tesla's board, allegedly due to Musk's threats
.In light of Twitter's content-moderation guidelines, Musk questioned the company's dedication to free speech values. According to Twitter's SEC filings from early April 2022, Musk had acquired more than 9% of the business. Soon after, Twitter said that Musk will become a board member. However, Musk changed his mind and put in an offer for the entire business, valued at $54.20 per share, for a total of $44 billion. The acquisition was approved by Twitter's board, granting him complete ownership of the business. "Enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans," according to Musk, were among his objectives for the firm.
